According to the updated Guidelines from the American College of Sports Medicine*, individuals ought to seek medical clearance by their health care provider prior to participating in regular exercise if:

  • They are physically inactive and have known cardiovascular disease, diabetes or chronic kidney disease
     
  • They have symptoms including pain or discomfort in the chest, neck, jaw or arms at rest or with activity; shortness of breath at rest or with mild exertion; dizziness or fainting; swelling in the feet or ankles; palpitations or racing heart rate; known heart murmur; or unusual fatigue

Additionally, individuals ought to seek medical clearance by their health care provider prior to participating in regular exercise if:

  • They are pregnant
  • They are being treated for cancer or have recently completed cancer treatment
